STRATEGIC GOAL #1: Make Midwifery Central to the Provision of Maternal and Newborn Care in Ontario

Objectives:

  • Advocate for midwives who are challenged to obtain hospital privileges or facing privilege restrictions
  • Develop and implement a supporter strategy
  • Address the needs of remote practice groups
  • Address the needs of rural practice groups
  • Explore optional models of care that could result in more flexibility in the current model of care
  • Develop and implement a LHIN Strategy
  • Advocate for revised drug and lab regulations
  • Advocate for appropriate alternate funding models that protect quality midwifery care and increase the availability of midwifery care
  • Advocate for the principles of the Canada Health Act and Medicare
  • Explore “full scope of practice” issues with the membership; develop a plan to address the outcomes of this exploration with CMO, hospitals and other stakeholders

STRATEGIC GOAL #2: Promote the Growth of Midwifery

Objectives:

  • Develop and institute a program of hospital certification/ accreditation designating “mother friendly” hospitals
  • Strengthen the consumer movement to support the growth of midwifery in Ontario
  • Develop and implement a Provincial Election Strategy
  • Advocate to government for the Expansion of the Midwifery Education Program
  • Advocate for midwifery in all provincial Health Human Resource Plan (HHRP) activities
  • Provide incentive for midwives trained outside of Ontario to practice in Ontario by advocating for an effective and accessible clinical audit process
  • Assess attrition and retention issues within midwifery and develop appropriate responses
  • Increase the likelihood of success of new midwives and new practices
  • Extract New Registrant funding from annual government budget process

STRATEGIC GOAL #3: Support Members in Emerging Clinical and Practice Risk Management Issues

Objectives:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management education plan based on RMSAM assessment modules
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management plan for template policies based on RMSAM assessment modules
  • In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, prepare a midwife specific pandemic plan
  • Develop a member critical incident support program
  • Provide support for a sexual health/HIV education program
  • Develop expert witness program
  • Support members continuing education needs when drug and lab regulations occur
  • Provide Practice management education

STRATEGIC GOAL #4: Enhance Opportunities and Means for Member Engagement with AOM Decision-making and Activities

Objectives:

  • Explore ways in which members can increase their involvement in the Association, respecting the unique scheduling and lifestyle issues of midwives
  • Explore means to increase the ability of the AOM to hear and responds to diverse voices within the AOM
  • Investigate technologies that would facilitate member engagement for members across Ontario, particularly for members in rural, northern and remote areas (eg video conferencing)
  • Undertake a constitution review
  • Explore possibility of a scholarship/bursary program
