Emergency Skills Workshops

The focus of the Emergency Skills Workshops is on “the execution of emergency measures in the absence of medical help.” Although according to the Midwifery Act the scope of practice is “spontaneous normal vaginal deliveries,” midwives need to have the skills to deal with emergencies prior to the arrival or accessing of specialized medical care.

Many of the emergencies that midwives are called upon to deal with are rare. Practice in simulated situations is essential for maintaining competence. There is strong support in the midwifery community for the CMO’s requirement for yearly certification in neonatal resuscitation and certification in emergency skills every two years.

ESWs are open to Registered Midwives from Ontario, Ontario midwifery students and to midwives from other jurisdictions with regulated midwifery.
